Moderna slashes its COVID-19 vaccine supply to Canada by half in April end
Ottawa/IBNS: Anita Anand Canada's Procurement Minister said that Moderna's supply of incoming vaccines to Canada would be half of the expected supply through the rest of Apri.
In a statement issued today, Anita said that of the expected doses of 1.2 million Moderna by the end of this month Moderna will ship only 650,000 doses.
Slower than anticipated ramp-up of their production capacity said Moderna caused this limited supply of Moderna's vaccine doses.
Anita also said that Moderna told Canada, that one to two million doses of the 12.3 million scheduled for delivery in the second quarter may be delayed until the third quarter and added that the federal government will continue to push Moderna to fulfill its commitments.
Earlier today, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) issued a call for additional restrictive measures, including replacing the per-capita approach to vaccine distribution with sharing provincial healthcare resources to address the COVID-19 crisis unfolding in several provinces of Canada
“As the third wave of the pandemic wreaks havoc on the healthcare and public health systems we are at a critical juncture...this country must come together to help support provinces most severely impacted,” said Dr. Ann Collins, president of the CMA.
