Member of Toronto-18 group Saad Khalid denied paraole
Toronto, Nov 16 (IBNS): A member of a so-called Toronto-18 group, Saad Khalid, has been denied a day or full parole, media reports said.
The decision to deny Khalid the parole was taken by a two-member parole board of Canada.
The parole board felt the arrested person needs more counselling. It said Khalid has "outstanding needs" that are required to be paid attention before granting parole.
Khalid was among the 18 people who were arrested in 2006 summer. His age is now 31.
The group of 18 had a plan to build and detonate bombs in three locations as a protest to Canada's military involvement in Afghanistan. 11 group members have so far been convicted.
Though Khalid's jail term initially was 14 years, later it was extended to 20.
The Supreme Court had earlier denied to hear Khalid's case along with two other group members.
According to the media report, the panel wrote: "Your presentation at today's hearing was insightful and forthcoming. You did not shy away from your responsibility and you were very articulate. Your remorse was genuine."
"At the same time, while your criminal history consists only of your index offence, the board views as an aggravating factor the seriousness of your crime and the catastrophic damages that your plot would have caused had your group been successful in moving ahead," the panel added.
