Lorry ploughs into Bastille Day celebration in France killing over 70 people

Nice, Jul 15 (IBNS): A lorry drove into a crowd in the southern French city of Nice, killing more than 75 people and injuring dozens, during the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14, the media reported on Friday.

The crowd had gathered on Promenade des Anglais to watch the fireworks display when a truck loaded with guns and other weapons ploughed into the crowd.

The driver was shot dead and guns and grenades were found inside the lorry, reported the BBC.

French President Francois Hollande said the attack was of a "terrorist nature" and that he was extending the state of emergency (which was to end on July 26) by another three months.

France had been on high alert following the November 2015 Paris attacks which left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded.

"France is badly hit," Hollande said, adding that "we need to do everything we can to fight against" such attacks, the BBC reported.

"All of France is under the threat of Islamic terrorism," said Hollande according to media reports.

Tweeted Donald Trump, "Another horrific attack, this time in Nice, France. Many dead and injured. When will we learn? It is only getting worse."
