Kentucky, Jan 24 (IBNS): At least two people were killed and more than 10 others were injured as a shooter opened fire at Marshall County High School in US state of Kentucky on Tuesday, media reports said.

The slain victims have been identified by authorities as  Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, reports said.

Bailey died at the high school and Preston died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, CNN reported quoting  State Police Commissioner Richard W. Sanders.

Sanders said the suspect walked into the school with a handgun and started shooting.

"We still have five students in critical condition," Sanders told media on the condition of the injured people.

The shooter has been taken into custody, confirmed Matt Bevin, Governor of Kentucky.

According to reports, the suspect will be charged with murder and attempted murder.

He tweeted :"The souls of Marshall County have been bruised and the fabric of the community has been torn, but the people of Benton, KY and the surrounding communities are strong...With faith in God and with reliance on friends and family, we will get through this dark day together...#WeAreKY."

The superintendent of Marshall County Schools also issued a statement and called the entire episode as a 'tragedy beyond words'.

The FBI is reportedly assisting the investigation into the matter.

The injured people are undergoing treatment.

Police said 14 people were hit by gunfire while five others suffered non-gunshot injuries while trying to escape the gunfire.
