Washington DC/IBNS: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that the United States had effectively won the war against Iran, claiming there was “practically nothing left to target”, media reports said.

However, Trump added that American forces would remain engaged to complete the mission against Iran, which was attacked in a joint operation by the United States and Israel.

Speaking at a public gathering about Operation Epic Fury, Trump said: “Is that a great name? Well, it’s only good if you win… we’ve won. You never like to say too early that we’ve won. We won. It was over in the first hour.”

“They gave me a list of 20 names for the attack on Iran and I was falling asleep… Then when I saw ‘Epic Fury’, I said, ‘I like that name’,” he added.

Nearly two weeks ago, the US and Israel launched strikes on Tehran, reportedly killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggering escalating military exchanges between the two sides.

Despite Trump’s claim of victory, both sides remain engaged in an intensifying conflict that has kept West Asia on edge.

Meanwhile, a Thai cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday amid rising tensions in the Gulf region.

The vessel, reportedly bound for India, caught fire after being hit.

According to a report by The Nation Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy is coordinating urgent assistance for the 23 Thai crew members aboard the ship.

Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyan said the Maritime Traffic Control Centre under the Navy Operations Centre received the first report of the incident at around 11 am on March 11.

The Thai-flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree had reportedly come under attack shortly after departing Khalifa Port at around 3 am.

The vessel is said to belong to Precious Shipping Public Company Limited.

Quoting the Thai Navy, the report said the Royal Navy of Oman has already rescued 20 of the 23 crew members. Rescue efforts are underway to locate and assist the remaining three.

The rescued sailors have been brought safely ashore in Khasab.
