Tehran: An Iranian man, who was the inspiration behind the hit Hollywood movie The Terminal, has died.

Mehran Karimi Nasseri had grabbed headlines after he stayed in Paris airport for 18 years.

Caught in a diplomatic limbo, Mehran Karimi Nasseri made a small area of Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport his home in 1988, reports BBC.

The Iranian refugee lived in the departure lounge of Terminal 1 in Charles de Gaulle Airport from 26 August 1988 until July 2006.

Despite being granted refugee status and the right to remain in France in 1999, he stayed at the airport until 2006, when he was taken to hospital to be treated for an illness, the British media reported.

According to reports, he stayed in a hostel using money which he had received for the film.

Nasseri returned to the airport a few weeks ago, where he lived until he died, an airport official told BBC.

In The Terminal, actor Tom Hanks had played the character of Mehran Karimi Nasseri.

In the 2004 released American comedy-drama film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, apart from Hanks, actors Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Stanley Tucci were a part.
