Hong Kong security law 'extremely worrying': German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas
Berlin/UNI: Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Wednesday said that the new 'national security law' which has been enforced on Hong Kong by the Chinese government will impact Europe's relations with China and felt that the European Union(EU) must "take a strong stand" on this matter.
German public broadcaster ZDF quoted Maas as saying that Hong Kong's autonomy is gradually being eroded which would adversely effect the relationship between China and the European Union.
He called on the European Union to take countermeasures emphasising that Europe as a whole has enough strength to counter China.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday signed the national security legislation for Hong Kong into a law. China's stated aim for passing this law is prohibition of any secession activities, critics say that this law would severely hamper individual liberty of the Hong Kong citizens.
Germany on Wednesday assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
