Heritage London Cemetery to charge £25,000 for burial spot close to grave of Karl Marx

A heritage cemetery in London is offering people a chance to bury their loved people next to communist pioneer Karl Marx's grave by paying a charge of  £25,000.

According to reports, Highgate Cemetery is planning to erect new graves after securing £100,000 of National Lottery Heritage funding.

The site, which already has roughly 53,000 burial spots, will now make space near the tomb of Marx - a spot particularly coveted by communists, reports Daily Mail.

The 37-acre burial spot is located in Hampstead Heath.

Apart from Karl Marx, the spot is also a resting place for several other celebrities like  George Michael, George Eliot, Douglas Adams and Michael Faraday.

What did the chief executive of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust say on the new initiative?

Ian Dungavell, the chief executive of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust, told The Guardian that it is important to accommodate new burials, as they help keep Highgate a “living” attraction.

How to visit the grave spot?

The cemetery is in Highgate N6, next to Waterlow Park, in the London Borough of Camden.

It comprises two sites, on either side of Swains Lane.

The main gate is on Swains Lane, just north of Oakshott Avenue.

There is another, disused, gate on Chester Road. The nearest public transport (Transport for London) is the C11 bus, Brookfield Park stop, and Archway tube station.
