Abuja/Xinhua/UNI: Fourteen people were killed and 10 others wounded in an attack by suspected gunmen at a village in northwest Nigeria, local police said on Tuesday.

Several houses were also set ablaze by the attackers who stormed the village of Karaye in Gummi local government area of Zamfara state on Sunday to wreak the havoc, Muhammad Shehu, a spokesman for the police, told Xinhua.

The attackers had entered the village through a bush, shooting indiscriminately at the residents.

Shehu said the police were suspecting a reprisal.

"The incident is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department and all the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution in order to serve as a deterrent to others," Shehu said, adding that the police had deployed personnel to the scene and embarked on extensive bush combing with a view to trailing and arresting the perpetrators.

He said corpses and injured victims were conveyed to a government hospital for autopsy and treatment.
