Kabul, Sept 3 (Xinhua/UNI) Casualties were feared after a powerful explosion rocked near a compound frequented by foreigners in eastern side of Afghanistan's capital of Kabul on Monday, an Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed.

"An explosion occurred roughly at 9:45 p.m. Monday night near Green Village in Police District 9 of Kabul," Nasrat Rahimi wrote on twitter.

The blast caused panic among the residents throughout the city as the sound of the blast was heard all around Kabul.

Rahimi said further details will be shared with the media as appropriate.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.

The Green Village complex had been targeted by Taliban insurgents at least three times within the a past few years.

"The nature of the blast could be a truck bombing as the explosion caused a plume of gray smoke to rise above the scene. It caused big destruction as I saw from a high building near the site," a resident Wasim Ahmadi told Xinhua.

The capital city with a population of nearly 5 million has been hit by series of terror attacks over the past couple of years.
