Donald Trump pulls US out of Paris agreement in a repeat of his 2017 move

Washington/D.C./IBNS: In a repeat of his 2017 stance, US president Donald Trump pulled out the nation from the climate agreement - dubbed as Paris Accord - in one of the major executive orders he took after swearing in at the Capitol One Arena in Washington on Monday.

The US, however, will have to wait for a year to be officially out of the Paris climate agreement.

Trump pulled the US out of the agreement in 2017 after assuming the office.

But it was undone by Trump's immediate predecessor Joe Biden, who departed from the White House on Monday, after taking charge in 2021.

The Paris Agreement, a non-binding treaty, was formed aiming at a global cooperation to minimise the causes of global warming.

Trump withdrew from the pact after global temperatures increased by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels in 2024 for the first time in a calendar year.

The US will join the countries like Iran, Yemen and Libya to opt out of the Paris Accord which was inked in the French capital Paris a decade ago.

Among other major decisions which he took on the day of inauguration, Trump signed an order to optt the US out of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

If the US moves out from WHO then the nation will also stop its financial contribution to it, media reports said.

The US is WHO's biggest financial contributor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ashish Jha, who served as White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator during the Biden administration, described the action as a 'strategic error'.

"WHO is a pretty essential organization — and with America’s withdrawal, it creates a political vacuum that only one country can fill — and that is China," Jha told CNN.

Taking oath as the 47th President of the United States, Trump on Monday said the "golden age" of America has begun and the country will be "greater than ever before."

"The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer during every single day of the Trump administration," Trump said amid massive applause and standing ovations.
