Donald Trump imposes travel ban after first death from Coronavirus in US

Washington/IBNS: US President Donald Trump has imposed travel restriction on people coming from Iran and has also advised his citizens to avoid visiting certain areas of South Korea and Italy.

This comes after the first death from Coronavirus was reported in the US from the Washington state.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump said: "Unfortunately, one person passed away overnight. She was a wonderful woman, a medically high-risk patient in her late 50s."

Apart from one confirmed death, there are currently 15 confirmed Coronavirus cases in the United States from COVID-19, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another 47 cases are among people repatriated to the US: three from China’s Wuhan, where the current coronavirus epidemic started in December, and 44 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Urging people not to panic, Trump stated: "Additional cases in the United States are likely, but healthy individuals should be able to fully recover. If you are healthy, you will probably go through a process and you will be fine."

"There is no reason to panic at all. Our country is prepared for any circumstance," the US President said after his return from India on Wednesday.

"We — we’re ready to adapt and we’re ready to do whatever we have to as the disease spreads, if it spreads.  As most of you know, the — the level that we’ve had in our country is very low, and those people are getting better, or we think that in almost all cases they’re better, or getting.  We have a total of 15.  We took in some from Japan — you heard about that — because they’re American citizens, and they’re in quarantine.  And they’re getting better too," he said.

Meanwhile, Governor of Washington State, Jay Inslee, declared on Saturday a state of emergency across the state.

"I, Jay Inslee, Governor of the state of Washington, as a result of the above-noted situation, ... do hereby proclaim that a State of Emergency exists in all counties in the state of Washington, and direct the plans and procedures of the Washington State Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan be implemented. " the statement read.

The governor also directed state agencies and departments to " to do everything reasonably possible to assist affected political subdivisions in an effort to respond to and recover from the outbreak."

On a global scale, to date, the coronavirus disease has infected over 85,000 people, of whom 2,900 have died and nearly 40,000 have recovered.
