Does China counter Canada by arresting its ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig?

| @indiablooms | Dec 12, 2018, at 09:18 pm

Beijing, Dec 12 (IBNS): Days after Chinese telecom giant Huawei Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was arrested, Canadian ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig has been detained in China, media reports said.

Kovrig's current employer has said Canada is working to release the ex-diplomat immediately.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he is considering the case "very seriously", BBC reported.

Bilateral tension between the two countries are high since Huawei CEO Meng Wanzhou was arrested on Dec 1 as per the requests of the US authorities. Wanzhou was granted bail by a Vancouver court in Canada on Tuesday.

The US claimed that Meng had misled multinational banks over Iran-linked transactions.

It also said the CEO had kept the banks in risk of violating US sanctions.

Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei, was granted a bail at a Vancouver court  by Justice William Ehrcke on conditions.

The conditions are Meng, who was in jail since Dec 1, must wear an ankle monitor and must stay at home between 11 pm and 6 am.
