US President Donald Trump has wished Americans on the Hindu festival of Diwali, saying the religious event marks a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness.

In his statement, the US President said: "Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali—the 'Festival of Lights'."

Trump said: "For many Americans, Diwali is a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness.  It is also a time to bring families and friends together to celebrate community, draw strength from hope, and embrace a lasting spirit of renewal."

He said: "As millions of citizens light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil."

Trump said: "To every American celebrating Diwali, may this observance bring abiding serenity, prosperity, hope, and peace."

WIth a large number of Hindu community people now staying in the US, Diwali si slowly becoming a popular festival in the US.

This year, California became the first West Coast state to recognise Diwali as a holiday.

On October 6, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 268 into law, making California the third state to designate Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights — as an official statewide holiday, reported The Sacramento Bee.
