Daughter of Canadian couple detained in China pressurises Trudeau on foreign visit

Ottawa, Dec 2 (IBNS): Daughter of Canadian couple, who have been detained in China since 2016, is hoping that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's China visit would release her captive parents before Christmas this year, media reports said.

John Chang and his wife Allison Lu were detained by Chinese authories in 2016 over an alleged showing of under report of wine export to Asia. The couple owns wineries in British Columbia and Ontario.

As the two were on a work trip to China, the Canadians had been arrested in Shanghai.

Though Lu has been released, John is still in the custody.

Lu has not been allowed to leave China.

The couple's daughter Amy Chang now wants Trudeau to hold on talks with China over free trade until her parents are not allowed to return to Canada.

Amy said the matter is not criminal. "When you're trying to negotiate a free trade agreement, especially between Canada and China, if you cannot protect your own citizens right now... there are more cases that are just going to come up," Amy told CBC News.

Worrying about her father's health, the young girl even said John has two tumours on his liver.

"Justin Trudeau, I really hope this time when you go to China, I really hope you can bring my parents home for Christmas," Amy said.

Trudeau will be touring China soon to discuss over a range of issues that include trade, business opportunities and tourism.
