Rome/IBNS: Amid a growing death rate, the coronavirus spread in Italy is slowing as the country has started recording fewer COVID-19 cases, a media report said.

According to an AFP report, after weeks of lockdown, Italy's civil protection service reported a new low of just 4.1 per cent new COVID-19 infection.

The report said the number of people being infected by the deadly virus at its epicentre in the northern Lombardy region has dropped.

In the last 24 hours, 1,590 people recovered which is the highest since the start of pandemic in the country, said civil protection service chief Angelo Borrelli, reported AFP.

Deputy Health Minister Pierpaolo Sileri said the country is on its way to having fewer people infected with COVID-19, said the report.

On Monday, the new coronavirus cases dropped to 25,006 from 25,392 on Sunday, informed the report.

The number of people currently sick with the illness and the number of people dying in the Mediterranean nation is still the highest as its death count grew by 812 in 24 hours to 11,591 on Monday, it said.

According to worldometers.info, so far 101,739 people have been infected by novel coronavirus in Italy with 11,591 deaths and 14,620 recoveries.
