Canadian MPs set to hold emergency meeting over asylum seekers

Ottawa, July 16 (IBNS): The House of Commons Citizenship and Immigration Committee will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss asylum seekers, who are crossing the US border and entering into Canada, media reports said.

The meeting is going to be held on request of opposition MPs.

The opposition MPs have called on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen to appear before the committee to discuss the matter.

Conservative and New Democratic Party (NDP) MPs are asking the Liberals to undertake studies to examine the asylum seekers.

Quebec and Ontario are the two provinces where maximum asylum seekers have crossed over.

However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Hussen have defended the government's way of handling the asylum seekers in early July.

"This is a legal responsibility, we can’t opt out of it, it's not a choice… we are obligated to give these people a fair hearing" Hussen has been quoted by CTV News.

According to Statistics Canada, the entry of number of asylum seekers have gradually decreased between the ports of entry since April.
