Canada-Trump officials discuss curb on phoney goods

Ottawa, Dec 4 (IBNS): Canada and US President Donald Trump's officials have discussed over the curbing phoney goods like fake iPhones and phoney Prada fashions, media reports said.

The US wants Canada to seize fake goods that are entering the US transit through Canada.

Canada has been asked to seize the goods even if they are coming from China.

According to a Canadian law, passed in 2015, officials can seize the fake imports entering the national market.

In last one year-time, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have seized 31 shipments which amounted to a worth Rs. $600,000.

Canada, however, rebuffed several propositions made by the US including the former Obama government to seize not only fake imports transiting through Canada but also the ones meant for sale in the Canadian market.

James Moore, then Canadian Industry ministry, was quoted by CBC News: "It's a bit of a stretch for someone in the American administration — I made this clear to them — to ask the Government of Canada and the Canadian taxpayers to act as a border filter for all goods destined for the U.S. market."

The Trudeau government now on the other hand seems to compromise with the US though earlier rebuffed the latter's propositions.

Trump's trade office issued a report and it was quoted by CBC News: "The United States remains deeply concerned that Canada does not provide customs officials with the ability to detain, seize, and destroy pirated and counterfeit goods that are moving in transit or are transhipped through Canada."
