The Canadian government has issued a travel advisory to Pakistan for its citizens due to the 'unpredictable' security situation in the South Asian country.

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Pakistan due to the unpredictable security situation," read the advisory issued by the Canadian government.

"There is a threat of terrorism, civil unrest, sectarian violence and kidnapping," the advisory said.

"Avoid non-essential travel to the city of Karachi, due to violence and the risk of terrorism," the advisory said.

The Canadian government said there is a threat of terrorism in Pakistan.

"The security situation is fragile and unpredictable. Several terrorist groups are present and operate across the country," the advisory said.

"In the formerly Federal Administered Tribal Area (FATA) and in the province of Balochistan, attacks are frequent and are often directed at security and military forces," it said.

Pakistan is witnessing an uptick in terrorist attacks in recent months.

In the advisory, the Canadian government also instructed its citizens to avoid travel to areas within 50 kilometres of the Afghanistan border and within 10kms of the borders of China, India and Iran.
