Canada: Humboldt Broncos return to ice after crash
Humboldt, Sept 13 (IBNS): Canadian ice hockey team Humboldt Broncos played their first game on Wednesday since they suffered a deadly accident on a highway of the province in April this year, media reports said.
The collision between Humboldt Broncos team bus and a transport truck claimed 16 lives and left 13 others injured.
Twenty nine yellow and green flags were unfurled to honour the deceased and injured people on Wednesday night.
Family members and crowds cheered as the flags were unfurled.
The Broncos played their opening match against the Nipawin Hawks.
However, former Broncos president Kevin Garinger, who was in-charge of the team when the accident had happened, said the darkness of the crash will never leave truly.
Garinger has been quoted by CTV News as saying, "We know that, while the darkness is much less, it will never truly leave us as it holds the love that we have left for those who are no longer with us and those who have been impacted by this tragedy."
"But we will forever cherish their memories and honour their legacy and, as hard as it has been, we have and will continue to move forward with them and because of them."
Sixteen people who were killed include Humboldt Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan along with several other players.
The victims include players Adam Herold, Connor Lukan, Evan Thomas, Jacob Leicht, Jaxon Joseph, Logan Boulet, Logan Hunter, Logan Schatz, Stephen Wack, Parker Tobin, team personnel Brody Hinz, Darcy Haugan, Glen Doerksen, Mark Cross and Tyler Beiber.
The team were on its way to Game 5 of a semi-final against the same team the Humboldt took on last night.
On Wednesday, the Nipawin Hawks cliched a 2-1 victory in the match in which the score was secondary.
Prior to beginning of the match, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had tweeted, "Welcome back, Broncos - Canadians across the country will be with you on every shift tonight. #HumboldtStrong"
