Canada: Champlain Bridge won't be ready to open before 2019, confirms federal government

Montreal, Oct 25 (IBNS): The federal government on Thursday confirmed that the Champlain Bridge will not be ready to open until 2019, media reports said.

Earlier it was stated, the bridge will be opened on Dec 21.

Now the government said it will be opened in June 2019 latest, missing its previous deadline.

Infrastructure Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, who visited the city on Thursday, said a strict opening date will be announced early next year, CTV News reported.

Authorities told media that the main structure of the bridge will be completed by December but works including waterproofing and paving of the span can only be done in the spring.

The new bridge is expected to last 125 years, report said.
