Canada: BC government declares state emergency as 566 wildfires burn across province

Victoria, Aug 16 (IBNS): The British Columbia government hasdeclared a state emergency as 566 wildfires are still burning across the province, media reports said.

Around 29 evacuation orders have been passed forcing 3,050 people to flee from their home.

Another 18,700 people are under evacuation alerts.

The officials told media that the wildfire might spread leading to more evacuations.

B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth called the declaration of state emergency as a "progressive step".

Farnworth's statement has been quoted by CTV News, "Taking this step will further ensure we can protect the public, property and infrastructure, and assist with firefighting efforts."

The state emergency will be effective for 14 days initially.
