Amid bilateral tension, Canadian lawmakers to go ahead with China trip
Ottawa, Jan 4 (IBNS): Canadian lawmakers will go ahead with a scheduled trip to China, media reports said.
Canadian MPs and Senators will begin their trip on Jan 5.
The two countries are having a strenuous relationship since Chinese telecom company Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in the Canadian city of Vancouver.
The Canadian government in a recent statement claimed China had detained 13 of its citizens and added that eight of them have been now released.
Wanzhou was arrested on Dec 1 on the request of US authorities.
The US claimed Wanzhou had misled multinational banks over Iran-linked transactions. It also said the CEO had kept the banks in risk of violating US sanctions.
Wanzhou was later granted bail.
Days after Wanzhou's arrest in Canada, Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat to China, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur, were detained on the suspicion of posing threat to the security of China.
Sarah McIver, a teacher, was detained due to a work permit issue related to her teaching job. She was later released and she returned to Canada.
