Washington, Jan 13 (IBNS): Outgoing US President Barack Obama surprised his deputy Joe Biden by honouring him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honour.

Praising a tearful Biden, Obama said the medal was bestowed upon the former for, "faith in your fellow Americans, for your love of country and your lifetime of service".

The citation of the medal reads, "An especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours."

Both Biden and Obama will officially leave office on Jan 20, as the 45th President Donald Trump is sworn in.

Biden however said that he plans to stay active in US politics.
