6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Japan today

Aomori/Japan: The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Aomori in northern Japan on Tuesday.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles) at 6:18 pm (0918 GMT).

So far, there have been no reports of any injuries or damage from reputable Japanese media reports said.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency has reported that the earthquake has affected Hokkaido in Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

The epicentre of the quake is at Aomori's eastern coast, with a depth of around 20 kilometres but no Tsunami warning has been issued by the authorities.

According to the Indian National Center for Seismology, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 with a depth of 50 kilometres and a location in Japan's Hokkaido.

Strict construction regulations are in place in the country to ensure that buildings are capable of withstanding strong earthquakes, and regular emergency drills are conducted to prepare for a significant tremor.

Despite the quake's strength, there was no tsunami warning issued.
