35 militants join reconciliation process in E. Afghanistan

Jalalabad, Afghanistan, May 6 (Xinhua) Up to 35 militants, including 13 Islamic State (IS) fighters, have joined peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, provincial government said Monday.

"On Sunday, 22 militants loyal to the Taliban group and 13 others affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist outfit, gave up war and joined peace process along with their arms, under the efforts of the provincial national security directorate," the government said in a statement.

Earlier this week, more than 20 fighters affiliated with the IS group and scores of others from the Taliban group, including some of their leaders, have been killed in a spate of security forces' clearance operation in Tangi and Shirzad districts of the province, the statement said.
