Mogadishu/Xinhua/UNI: At least three people were killed and four others injured in explosions in Awdigle town in Somalia's southern region of Lower Shabelle on Monday, a police officer confirmed.

Abdiladif Ato, commander of police forces in Awdigle town told journalists that two consecutive bomb blasts happened in the town causing deaths and injuries.

The latest blast occurred as government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab extremists in southern regions, but the militants still hold swathes of rural areas in those regions conducting ambushes and planting landmines.

The attack came after several mortar shells hit Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu and the heavily fortified Halane base which houses African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) headquarters on Sunday evening.

Sources said the mortar shells hit the Halane facility, noting that there were casualties. The AU mission has not commented on the incident so far amid reports one person was injured in the attack.

Al-Qaida allied terror group, al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it fired nine mortar shells at the facility.

Al-Shabab often launches gun and bomb attacks on officials, Somali security forces and AMISOM facilities in an effort to topple the government.
