West Indies beat UAE, inch towards q/f

Napier, Mar 15 (IBNS): Moving a step closer towards qualifying for the quater-finals, West Indies defeated the UAE by six wickets in a Pool B match of the World Cup here on Sunday.

Bowling out the Asian side, who played their second World Cup this year, for 175 runs, West Indies batsmen reached 176 runs by losing four wickets with 19.3 overs to spare.

Riding on Johnson Charles (55) and Jonathan Carter (50*), West Indies  easily reached the target at the end despite losing four wickets.

Dwayne Smith  (15), Marlon Samuels (9),  Andre Russell (7) posted low scores and failed against an bowling attack which lacked the sting.

Amjad Javed and Manjula Guruge took two wickets each for the UAE.

Earlier, the UAE batsmen were bowled out for 175 runs in 47.4 overs.

Crumbling at  26-5, Nasir Aziz (60) and Amjad Javed (56) added 107 runs in the seventh wicket partnership which eventually helped the side post more than 170 runs on the scoreboard.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder (4-27), Jerome Taylor  (3-36) and Russell (2-20) destroyed their opponents.
