West Indies batting star Shivnarine Chanderpaul retires

He put an end to his 22- year-long career.

“The WICB acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally and we wish him all the best,” said WICB President Dave Cameron was quoted as saying by the official website of the board.

In his career, the batsman featured 164 Test appearances, 268 One-day Internationals and 22 Twenty20 Internationals.

His debut match for West Indies was against England in March 1994. He made a half-century on debut.

The West Indies won by an innings and 44 runs. Now at 41 years, his final Test against England last May in Barbados was also a memorable occasion for the 00-year-old, as West Indies won by five wickets to level a three-Test series against Alastair Cook’s side.

Chanderpaul’s highest score in Tests was 203 not out and he finished with an average of 51.37, and he also posted a top score of 150 in ODIs, finishing with an average of 41.60.

India's Sachin Tendulkar, who has played in several matches against  Chanderpaul, tweeted: "Congrats Shiv on a great career. You practiced the virtue of staying at the wicket & accumulating runs. Best of luck. #chanderpaulretires."

West Indies player Darren Sammy said: "Long live the tiger Thank you Shiv Chanderpaul for your grit determination and consistency in."

Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble tweeted: "Well done Shiv Chanderpaul on a wonderful career. Wishing you the very best in the future. A truly great player!"

Former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist tweeted: "Unsung hero of WI cricket. "

Ex-Indian player VVS Laxman said: "Congrats Shiv Chanderpaul on an exceptional careerHad a gr8 appetite to score big 100's esp against India.Hav a fulfilling retirement."
