WC: SL beat Afghanistan by 4 wickets
Bowling out the minnows for 232 runs in 49.4 overs, Sri Lanka reached the target of 236 runs by losing six wickets in 48.2 overs.
A spirited performance by Afghanistan bowlers made Sri Lanka win the match after a tremendous struggle.
Sri Lanka were reduced to 51 for four in 12 overs, making things tough for the Asian side.
Mahela Jayawardene (100) and Angelo Mathews (44) changed the scenario and pulled the match to their favour by adding 126 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.
Jayawardene hit eight boundaries and six in his 120-ball knock.
Afghanistan brought themselves back in the match by taking the wickets of both Jayawardene and Mathews.
Thisara Perera came out to rescue his side as he hammered unbeaten 26-ball 47 to win the match.
Perera and Jeevan Mendis (9*) added 58 runs in the seventh wicket partnership.
Hamid Hassan took three wickets for Afghanistan.
Earlier, Afghanistan were bowled out for 232 runs in 49.4 overs.
Asghar Stanikzai remained the top scorer for Afghanistan with his 54 runs.
Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga and Mathews took three wickets apiece.
