US Open: Maria Sharapova loses to Anastasija Sevastova, crashed out of the tournament

New York, Sep 4 (IBNS): Russian tennis icon Maria Sharapova's run in the US Open 2017 ended in the fourth round after losing to Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.

16th seed, Sevastova, outplayed the former world number number one 5-7 6-4 6-2.

Sharapova, who was banned for failing in a dope test, returned to the tennis court in the US Open with a wild card.

After the match, the 30-year old tennis player was quoted by BBC as saying: "It's been a really great ride in the last week."

"I can take a lot from this week. It's great to get that major out of the way. It was an incredible opportunity. I'm very thankful for the opportunity.I did my best. I can be proud of that" she added.

Sevastova will take on Sloane Stephens in the quarter final.
