Third Test: Dangerous pitch forces early stumps, SA need 224 runs
Johannesburg, Jan 26 (IBNS): A dangerous pitch brought play to a close 20 minutes early on the third day of the final Test match between India and South Africa here on Friday.
India set 241 runs target for South Africa to win the Test and register a whitewash.
It was after South Africa opener Dean Elgar was struck on the helmet by a short ball from seamer Jasprit Bumrah that umpires decided to stop the match before its scheduled time.
South Africa were 17 for one when the match ended.
Elgar 11 not out and Hashim Amla (2*) are currently at the crease.
South Afric astill need 224 runs to win the match.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has already picked up the wicket of Aiden Markram (4) to give South Africa the initial blow needed in their run chase.
India were earlier bowled out for 247 runs.
Ajinkya Rahane (48) played a crucial knock and remained the top scorer for India. He was not picked in the squad in the last two series.
Skipper Virat Kohli added 41 runs.
Kagiso Rabada (3-69), Vernon Philander (3-61) and Morne Morkel (3-47) destroyed the Indian batting line-up.
South Africa have already won the series 2-0.
