T20 World Cup: Kishan’s 77 sparks carnage as India crush Pakistan by 61 runs, storm into Super 8
India’s run in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup gathered further momentum as the defending champions thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan national cricket team by 61 runs in a one-sided group-stage clash in Colombo on Sunday.
After posting a commanding 175 for seven, India’s bowlers bundled out Pakistan for 114 to seal a comprehensive victory and book their place in the Super 8 stage.
The win marked the eighth time India national cricket team have defeated Pakistan in T20 World Cup history, and their 175 was the highest total they have posted against their rivals across ten editions of the tournament.
The innings was anchored by wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who smashed a scintillating 77 off 40 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries and three sixes. He found solid support from Suryakumar Yadav (32), Shivam Dube (27) and Tilak Varma (25), as India built a competitive total on a challenging surface.
For Pakistan, Saim Ayub was the standout bowler with three wickets, as the side relied heavily on spin to contain the Indian batting line-up. However, Kishan’s aggressive approach dismantled the spin attack and denied Pakistan any opportunity to seize control.
The result also confirmed the USA's chances to progress to the Super 8.
Chasing 176, Pakistan never appeared settled at the crease. Usman Khan top-scored with 44, but regular breakthroughs from the Indian bowlers ensured there was no meaningful fightback. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy claimed two wickets apiece as Pakistan were dismissed for 114.
In a continuation of the frosty relations seen during last year’s Asia Cup, Indian players declined to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts after the match, underlining the tense rivalry between the two sides.
India will next face the Netherlands in their final group-stage fixture in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
