Steve Smith to play for Barbados Tridents in CPL 2018

Sydney, July 25 (IBNS): Suspended Australian cricketer Steve Smith has joined Barbados Tridents to play for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2018.

The announcement was made on Wednesday.

Smith has replaced Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is no longer available for the selection.

Reacting to Smith's joining in the team, Barbados coach Robin Singh said: "It is a huge blow to lose Shakib for the tournament but in Steve Smith we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting line-up,” said Singh, the former India all-rounder.

“As a man who has played cricket at the highest level all over the world we are very confident that Smith will be a big success with the Tridents.”

Smith has been banned by the Cricket Australia (CA) from all forms of cricket for one year over his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal which shook the Aussie cricket in March, 2018.

The incident occurred during the Test series between Australia and South Africa.

After being banned, Smith first appeared as a cricketer in the inaugural Global T20 Canada league.

The former Australian skipper even scored 167 runs in six matches while playing for Toronto Nationals.

The CPL 2018 will run between Aug 8 and Sept 16.

Barbados will play their first match against Guyana Amazon Warriors on Aug 11.
