Steve Smith rises from Ashes, rescues Australia from trouble with century
Birmingham, Aug 2 (IBNS): Making Australia's dramatic turnaround from an imminent batting failure in The Ashes, Steven Smith scored a big century in the first Test against England at Edgbaston here on Friday.
Australia were bowled out for 284.
Smith, who has been able to tackle the English bowling, scored 144 off 219 balls. During his marvelous innings, the former Australian skipper hit 16 fours and two sixes.
At one point of time, Australia were reeling under pressure at 122/8 after Pat Cummins was dismissed by Ben Stokes.
After Cummins' exit, Smith stitched a 88-run partnership with Peter Siddle who scored 44 off 85 balls.
Travis Head had scored 35 runs.
Stuart Broad was the most successful bowler for England. He picked five wickets for 86 runs in 22.4 overs.
In reply, England scored 10/0 in two overs at stumps on day two of the match.
