Mumbai, Apr 18 (IBNS) Indian batting icon and former captain Sachin Tendulkar on Monday congratulated Dipa Karmakar after she created history by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics.

"Congratulations #DipaKarmakar on creating history with your qualification. You inspire young Indians with your achievement. Best wishes," Tendulkar tweeted.

The 22-year old, who hails from Tripura, also ended a 52-year old wait, as 1964 was the last time the Olympics witnessed an Indian gymnast.

Karmakar has also won a Common Wealth Games and Asian Championship bronze medal.

So far, only 11 gymnasts have represented India post independence in the global sporting extravaganza.
