Prithvi Shaw's temperament stands out for me: Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata, Oct 4 (IBNS): Praising Indian batsman Prithvi Shaw, who scored a debut Test hundred against Windies on Thursday, former skipper Sourav Ganguly has said the young batter's on-field temperament stands out for him.

Ganguly made the comment on the sidelines of an event in the city.

Commenting on Shaw's 134-run knock, Ganguly, who also scored a hundred on his debut Test match at Lord's back in 1996, said: "It must be a phenomenal day for him actually to get a 100 on debut. He has got debut hundred in Ranji trophy, Duleep Trophy and (now playing for) India. So its phenomenal. I didn't get a Ranji trophy debut hundred but the rest.

"What stands out is the way he batted. He just dominated and got a hundred and what stands out for me is his temperament. Big match, first match, he just played the way he knew. Its still early days, he will have to go the distance, going around the world but congratulations to him and I thought he was absolutely marvelous today." (sic)

Though India had lost an early wicket on the first day of the opening Test match in the form of KL Rahul, who went out for a duck, Shaw partnered his senior Cheteshwar Pujara to put a 206-run partnership for the second wicket.

In the course of his innings, which took just 154 balls, Shaw smashed 19 fours.

When asked about whether the 18-year old, who lifted the Under-19 cricket world cup by captaining his side earlier this year, would become the substitute to one of the openers who had struggled in England, Ganguly said: "Lets wait and see. He will go to Australia in a couple of months' time. I am sure he will do well because he is a good back foot player and I hope he does well because we want to see young players doing well so will find out."

Apart from Shaw, Pujara scored a resilient 86-run knock to steer India to a strong position on day 1 of the Test match.

India finished the first day's play at 364/4 with skipper Virat Kohli still at the crease scoring 72 runs.

Meanwhile, after Karun Nair, Indian opening batsman Murali Vijay has joined the band of players who claimed they were not communicated after being axed from the team.

Vijay, who was reportedly dropped in the middle of the England series this summer, said he was not communicated by the chief selector or any other person after being dropped from the national side.

However, Ganguly believes players should always be communicated. The former skipper said: "See to be honest, I don't know the team dynamics because I have not been involved with the team in any way for a long period of time but I think its important that the selectors communicate to players because the players are sensitive when they play.

"And Mural Vijay has done extremely well for India. He had a couple of failures in England and I hope they communicate but I have no idea of team dynamics."
