Pakistan players Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir announce retirement from international cricket
Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, who last played for Pakistan in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, have retired from the international game.
Imad made his international debut in 2015 against Zimbabwe. Over the course of his career, he scored 1540 international runs and took 117 international wickets. He also served as the vice-captain when Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.
Amir too was a crucial part of that winning team, delivering a standout performance in the final against India—one of the defining moments in his career. Across 159 matches, the searing left-arm quick scalped 271 wickets in all formats for Pakistan.
Imad announced his retirement via social media on Friday. The following day, a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the retirements of both Imad and Amir.
In his statement to the PCB, Imad Wasim said: “It has been a great journey representing my country and the fulfilment of a huge dream. I would like to thank the fans for supporting me and the team throughout these years.
“I would also like to thank the PCB for all their support at each step and I wish great success to the national team and look forward to supporting Pakistan cricket from the other side of the ground.”
Mohammad Amir said: “It has been a great honour to play for Pakistan across all three formats. I know this is a difficult decision, but I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan cricket to new heights.
“I would like to thank the PCB for always extending the much-needed support over the years and I look forward to watching the team excel. I would also like to thank Pakistan fans for always supporting me thorough out my career.”
Both Imad and Amir had previously announced retirement in 2023 and 2021 respectively but reversed their decision after Pakistan sought their services for the T20 World Cup in June 2024.
In the tournament, Amir finished as Pakistan's joint top wicket-taker, claiming 7 wickets in four matches. On the other hand, Imad had a disappointing campaign, managing only 19 runs and 3 wickets in three matches.
