NZ set India a target of 243 runs

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IBNS): Asked to bat first, the New Zealand batsmen put up 242 runs for the loss of nine wickets here on Thursday against India.

After a slump in the first ODI, the Kiwi batsmen batted well in the second to reach a respectable total, though their cause was propelled by skipper Kane Williamson.

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, Umesh Yadav dismissed Martin Guptill in the second ball of the innings.

Guptill (0) failed to read the delivery which pitched on middle and castled his off stump.

A 120-run partnership followed between Tom Latham and the Kiwi skipper for the ensuing wicket, before the former was trapped in front by Kedar Jadhav for 46.

However, Williamson stood firm, anchoring the Black Caps innings, in the meantime reaching his three-figure mark.

The Kiwi skipper scored 118 runs off 128 balls, with the help of 14 boundaries and a six.

He also stitched together a couple of useful partnership with Ross Taylor (21) and Corey Anderson (21).

While the Taylor-Williamson partnership yielded 38 runs for the third wicket, the ensuing one, between Anderson and Williamson added 46 runs for the fourth wicket.

At 204 for the loss of four wickets in 40 overs, the Indian spinners impeded the visitor's scoring rate, as they lost wickets in heaps.

Amit Mishra, who picked up three wickets in the first game, emulated his performance, as he accounted for Williamson, Taylor and Anderson.

Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, giving away just 35 runs while picking up three wickets in his 10 overs.

Kedar Jadhav, Axar Patel and Umesh Yadav accounted for a wicket each.

The Kiwi lower order failed to match their skipper's aggression as six batsmen failed to score in double digits.
