New York: A moment of emotion gripped the court on Friday when American Tennis star Serena Williams waved farewell to her illustrious career after she lost to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in a US Open clash here.

Williams, who will soon turn 41, is expected to have played the last match of her career.

She was defeated by her Australian opponent 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-1.

In her 23-year-long career, Serena had registered 23 major singles wins.

Asked if she would reconsider retiring after her performances this week, Williams was quoted as saying by BBC: "I'm literally playing my way into this and getting better. I should have started sooner this year. I don't think so, but you never know."
