Kolkata to host school rowing championship

Kolkata, Jun 7 (IBNS): The 42nd 'K C Mahindra All India School Regatta', the school rowing event in Asia, will kick start on Sunday at Rabindra Sarovar lake here.
About three hundred students, both boys and girls representing 60 schools from nine states and a union territory, will stake their claim for the top honours in the eight-day championship, being organized by the Lake Club  at its course in Rabindra Sarovar.
 
Briefing the media persons, Kalyan Sarengi, a veteran oarsman and a senior member of the Club intimated that the competition would be held in two groups - senior and junior, both for boys and girls. 
 
The events of the meet would be restricted to coxed fours and scull and would be rowed for a distance of 500 meters.
 
Sarengi said that as many as fifteen oarspersons who have represented the country in various international meets had their initiation at this school regatta. 
 
He informed that the club would also offer scholarships worth Rs. 2,00,000 in memory of its former member and oarsman Janaki Das.
 
Beside the hosts, the other participating states and union territory are Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Andaman and Nicober Islands, Maharshtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Punjab and Karnataka.
