Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Neeraj Chopra for the first position in Doha Diamond League in javelin throw.

Tweeting his congratulatory message, the Prime Minister wrote: "First event of the year and first position!

“With the World lead throw of 88.67m, @Neeraj_chopra1 shines at the Doha Diamond League. Congratulations to him! Best wishes for the endeavours ahead."

Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra started his 2023 season on Friday by winning the 10-man men's javelin field at the Doha Diamond League held at the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in the capital city of Qatar.

Doha Diamond League is an annual one-day track and field meeting held at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

It is part of the Diamond League – the top-level international circuit for the sport. It is typically held in May as the first leg of the Diamond League series.

Jakub Vadlejch, who won the silver medal in javelin at the Tokyo Olympics, threw several times over 85m and finished second with his best throw being 88.63m.

Anderson Peters, the reigning world champion who had thrown over 93m in Doha last year, came in third with his best effort being 85.88m.
