Indian bowlers shine, Root continues fighting
A brilliant century by Mural Vijay and a memorable last wicket stand between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and number 11 Mohammed Shami helped India post 457 in their first innings.
Indian bowlers bowled brilliantly to ensure India end the day on an advantageous position.
Having posted 134-1 at one point of the innings with overnight unbeaten pair Sam Robson (59) and Gary Ballance (71) playing steadily, England looked to give a solid reply to the visitors.
The match soon changed its direction as England kept losing wicket to stand at 202 or seven after 70 overs.
Joe Root (78*) and Stuart Broad (47) added 78 runs in the eighth wicket partnership to momentarily give some resistance to the Indian bowlers.
Kumar removed Broad and then showed Liam Plunkett (5) the way back towards the pavilion to give England two quick blows.
James Anderson (23*) and Root, however, frustrated the tourists as the last wicket added 54 runs and remained unbeaten for the day.
Kumar picked up four wickets while Ishant Sharma took three in his superb spell of pace bowling.
Shami took 2 wickets.
