Bhubaneswar, July 7: India's leading athlete in decathlon, Jagtar Singh, is the latest casualty of latest dope scandal in Indian athletics.

The 23-year-old from Rajasthan failed a dope test and was left out of the Indian squad that is participating in the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship at the Kalinga Stadium here.

Jagtar, who appeared late by four hours to give the urine sample at the Federation Cup in Patiala on June 2, tested positive for Meldonium. He will now face automatic suspension pending a hearing, according to NADA.

Jagtar won gold with a personal best tally of 6888 points at the Federation Cup.

When the decathlon competition began here on Thursday, his name did not figure in the start list leaving the other Indian Abhishek Shetty in the field. The positive test result was informed to the Athletics Federation of India on June 28.

Jagtar emerged champion at the All-India inter-university meet in Coimbatore in January this year and he improved it further at the Federation Cup, delivering his personal best in five of the ten events.

Meldonium came into spotlight last year after Maria Sharapova tested positive for it. It came into the list of banned substances in 2015 and the standard ban for a first-time offence is four years.

Jagtar can ask to test his B sample. If found positive he will face a ban upto four years. A reaction from the AFI is awaited.
