Ind vs Aus: Australia dismissed for 285, set India target of 441 runs

Pune, Feb 25 (IBNS): Driven by the century of skipper Steven Smith, the Australian second innings folded for 285 runs, thereby setting India a steep total of 441 runs to win the first Test match of the four-match series.

Smith, who missed out in the first innings after getting a start, made it count, scoring 109 runs off 202 balls.

His innings consisted of 11 boundaries.

This was also his fifth consecutive Test century against India.

The Australian innings was also given impetus by the big hitting of Mitchell Starc, who clobbered 30 runs off 31 balls, dispatching three of those for maximums and two to the fence.

For India, ace spinner and numero uno Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin added four scalps to his kitty, while his spin partners Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav accounted for three and one wickets respectively.

Umesh Yadav backed up his four-for in the first innings with another two in the next one.

India have never chased down a target above 440 runs in the past, in Test cricket.

Their highest score at home remains 387 for the loss of four wickets, which they achieved against England in Chennai in 2008.

But with almost three  days in hand and a visibly crumbling pitch, the Indian batters will have to put up a much improved show than their previous outing to even draw the match.

The home team is presently chasing a record winning streak.

They have remained unbeaten in 19 Tests so far, winning 15 of those.
