Former cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma dies of cardiac arrest

Mumbai/IBNS: Former Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma, who was a part of the 1983 World Cup team, died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday.

He was 66.

Sharma is survived by his wife Renu Sharma, two daughters Puja, Preeti and son Chirag Sharma.

Sharma, who played between late 1970s and 1980s, was a middle-order batsman.

He scored over 1,600 runs in 37 Tests with two centuries and nine fifties.

Sharma scored 883 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs) at an average of 28.48.

After his retirement, he was involved with the Indian cricket board as well as Punjab and Haryana cricket.

Mourning his death, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, "Shocked and deeply pained by the demise of Yashpal Sharma ji. Have fond memories of watching him bat during the 1983 World Cup. His contribution to Indian cricket shall always be remembered. My sincere condolences to the entire Sharma family."

Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble said, "Shocking to hear about the passing of Yashpal sharma. One of the heroes of our first World Cup win. Condolences to his family and friends."

Former cricketer VVS Laxman tweeted, "Devastating news of the passing of Yash Paaji. He was one of the hero’s of 1983 World Cup winning team and was a very affable person. Heartfelt condolences to the family. Thoughts and Prayers. Om Shanti."
