Mumbai, Apr 7 (IBNS): The Bombay High Court on Thursday ruled that the first match of the catch-rich Indian Premier League will be held in Mumbai as per schedule.

The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday.

"Are you going to maintain gardens and stadiums when people are dying?" the court told the Board of Control for Cricket in India as a hearing into a petition  against holding Indian Premier League matches in the state commenced.

Maharashtra is facing severe drought situation.

Amid drought situation in Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday on questioned the BCCI and cricket associations in Maharashtra and Mumbai over the issue of use of water for maintaining cricket pitches in the state for the cash-rich Indian Premier League that will start this month.

The court said 20 matches of the league, which are scheduled to be played in Maharashtra, should be shifted to states that have abudant water.

" People are more important or your IPL matches?," the court observed.

Mentioning the state of water trouble in Maharashtra, the court said: "This is criminal wastage."

The observation was made by a division Bench of the court headed by Justice V M Kanade while it was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Loksatta Movement.

The IPL will start from Apr 9.

Three venues from Maharashtra host IPL matches in the state. Three stadiums in Maharashtra will host IPL matches.
