Cristiano Ronaldo turns 31

Kolkata, Feb 5 (IBNS) One of the present soccer greats, Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his 31st birthday on Friday.

Born in 1985 to Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and José Dinis Aveiro, Christiano was only eight when he started playing football.

According to a story, it wasn't until he was 14 that he took the game seriously and pursue it as a career.

Though he started with Sporting CP, a Portuguese club, playing there for a season, it was in Manchester United that he found much success and stardom.

Ronaldo's 6 season stint with the English club saw him appear in 196 matches across all competitions and score 84 goals.

A move in 2009 to Spanish club Real Madrid, his present team ensured him the title of the highest paid player for a period of time.

Ronaldo's stay in Real also broke some records, both in the Club as well as in the European football circuit.

He is presently the highest goal-scorer for Real, surpassing fellow retired footballer Raul.

Ronaldo has scored 55 goals for his country.

His rivalry with his contemporary Argentinian Lionel Messi is well documented.

He is also heavy into charity, supporting many causes in his native town as well as other places.
