Chris Gayle says no to India ODI, T20I selection

Kingston, Oct 8 (IBNS): Windies cricket great Chris Gayle has made himself unavailable for the national One Day International (ODI) and Twenty-20 International teams, which are due to play hosts India later this month.

The southpaw, who played his last List A game for his home state Jamaica, declined selection.

A legend in the T20 format, Gayle marked the occasion with a match winning hundred.

The other significant name to drop out from the Windies ODI setup is big-hitting allrounder Andre Russell.

The Jamaican Russell is recuperating from an injury and is expected to get back to the national side when it locks horns with India for the three-match T20 series.

Meanwhile, keeping in mind the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, which is scheduled for 2019, and the World T20 in 2020, the Windies selection committee has fielded youngsters in the squad.

Chairman of selection panel Courtney Browne said, "With the 2020 ICC World T20 two years away and the limited amount of T20 Internationals within the next year, the panel believes at this juncture it is time to invest in the young players that have emerged over the last two years from Windies A and B teams, along with 2018 CPL."

In the T20 squad, the Windies have opted for more experience, drafting in the likes of Russell, seasoned campaigner Keiron Pollard and Darren Bravo.

ODI squad: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Oshane Thomas

T20I squad: Carlos Brathwaite (c), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, Obed McCoy, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Khary Pierre, Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Oshane Thomas
