Big call for SA series: KL Rahul named ODI skipper as injured Shubman Gill misses out
The selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India have named KL Rahul as the stand-in captain of the ODI squad that will face South Africa in the absence of injured Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.
Regular captain Gill was injured during the first Test match against South Africa in Kolkata, forcing him to miss the remaining Test and ODI series against the visitors.
Rishabh Pant, who is captaining the Test squad in Gill's absence, is leading the Indian team in the ongoing second Test against South Africa.
Seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were added to the squad, apart from Tilak Varma, Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj remained missing from the three-match series squad.
As per Cricbuzz report, Gill is currently in Mumbai for an assessment of his neck injury.
Gill was named the captain of the Indian ODI team ahead of the recent tour to Australia, passing the baton from Sharma.
Dhruv Jurel retained the spot despite Pant's inclusion in the team.
South Africa is currently leading the series 1-0.
Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Prasidh will lead the pace battery in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj.
Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Jadeja are in charge of the spinning department.
The series will begin in Ranchi on November 30.
After the ODI series, the two teams will compete in a T20 series.
